The Retreat Care Home in Plymouth, Devon

Residential Care Home Environment

We opened The Retreat, our first Residential Care Home located in Plymstock, Plymouth, Devon, in 1998.  It is our mission to help dispel your doubts and difficulties. At The Retreat, our Plymouth Care Home, we provide residents with individual care and attention of the highest standard in a safe, homely environment. We pride ourselves on our happy and welcoming atmosphere and have a long track record of caring for the elderly.

The environment here is so warm and friendly that The Retreat feels like a comfortable hotel. Family and friends are always welcome.  You can dine with us, for instance; and there are no rigid visiting hours.

We enhance the quality of life of our residents through the provision of varied social activities.  But nobody is forced to join in.  Many of our residents will prefer a quiet walk in the gardens, or to sit quietly engaged in conversation, or to simply read a book.

You will find that our home smells nice; and has a really good feel as soon as you walk in the door.

We are located in a quiet area of Plymouth, in an old manor house with large grounds. Our residents are free to walk in the gardens; and some even get involved in the gardening or picking flowers and flower-arranging.  The Retreat is a Grade 2* Listed building; and has many original Georgian features.

Care Home Philosophy

The Retreat Care Home is totally committed to creating a loving, happy, active and caring environment for the elderly and frail.

Our residential care home encourages the independence of our residents. Each resident has their own Key Worker, who will is responsible for providing their bespoke support and companionship.

Expressing individuality is so important for emotional, intellectual and spiritual well-being. Everybody is treated with respect and dignity. We respect the individual right to get up and go to bed when they want, when to eat and drink, and what to do during the day. Nobody is forced to partake in activities or to eat at set times.

A safe and secure environment is provided; with the most up-to-date call bell system, fall and movement sensors and door alarms. There is good security with external cameras and many other safety devices and features. All personal care is geared to the wishes of the residents; and is recorded on our Care Control iPads; with personal details securely saved on external servers.

We have excellent medication procedures with lockable medication cabinets in each room. We also have excellent continence control procedures; and this along with our pressure relieving mattresses and carer vigilance, helps prevent pressure sores.

In our care home, staff communication and listening skills are essential.  We have regular resident’s meetings and two Well-Being Champions; resident and staff representatives.

We Specialise in Providing a Sensible Care Home Environment

At our Care Home we provide a high standard of care for up to twenty residents. Most are elderly and frail, and enjoy the secure, homely environment of The Retreat. Some people come to live with us because they want companionship.

We also care for elderly people suffering from mild confusion or short-term memory loss, and for those who are physically weak or have mobility problems.

Respite care can also be provided when we have the room.

We provide the mental, emotional and physical stimulation so necessary to ward off the onset of serious dementia conditions. We pride ourselves in having the right people skills and being successful in engaging constructively with our care home residents.

Testimonials about the best Care Home in Plymouth - The Retreat

Dear Susan and Paul,

Just a note to let you know how much Sally and I appreciated all that you did for my father during the whole time that he stayed with you.

Harold had the best possible last year of his life with you at The Retreat, the best Care Home in Plymouth. You were kind and thoughtful to an old man who had not learned to expect too much from either of those attributes, and I know his occasional tears in your house were tears of gratitute at your loving care. I can't say how much I admire what the two of you do from day to day. You have such courage and you do so much good work.

Harold is looking back on you now with gratitude that I know is very profound.

Love to you both, Colin.

Dear Sue and Paul

It is with regret that we have to inform you that Alan now needs nursing care.  We thank you for your help, support and kindness to Alan and ourselves.  We are sorry that he has to leave your care; you and your staff were wonderful.

Thank you for everything, Dennis & Kay

Many, many thanks
