gardens

Enjoying the sunshineWhen you enter our gardens you experience tranquillity and enchantment. The sound of water bubbles from the fairy fountain in the centre of our rose garden. Box hedging in a traditional design, defines the rose beds and these are in keeping with the Georgian features of the house. The garden is a sun trap and in summer, spring and autumn you will find a group of people sitting here enjoying casual conversation and refreshments.

The Retreat's tranquil gardensWild ducks from Hooe Lakes visit us each Spring and stay for most of the year. Our Bantam fancy-breed chickens free range our extensive gardens, spy on the residents, and are a source of constant amusement. A quiet area to sit is located around the elevated pond which contains plenty of life, including tadpoles, newts, pond skaters, goldfish and lilies. There are many other quiet places to sit and contemplate nature or simply to sit and admire the mature shrubs, cherry trees, and the ancient Magnolia and Yew trees. You will hear the sound of wild birds as you wake in the morning to their dawn chorus.

Sitting out in the GardenA large main lawn is situated beside the driveway and kitchen herb garden. It is ideal for entertaining family and friends, playing croquet or boules, or simply to take gentle exercise. Here we often hold garden parties or barbecues.
